Socks

Image
This image is an animated representation of a pair of black socks. I do not own these socks. Any resemblances to your own pair of black socks or this story is a mere coincidence (1).      This is a story all about how my life got twist-turned upside down. I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there. I’ll tell you how I under-shaved my legs, just by a few hairs. ***      It happened around late-March, when the weather began hinting at warmer days to come. Bright sunlight brought enough warmth to make you question the number of layers you were wearing, before quickly crossing your arms as the accompanying cool, windy breeze reminded you of winters past. On one such day, I figured it would be a good idea to test my tolerance to the weather by popping on a pair of ankle-length leggings. Much like dipping your toe in the water before jumping in, I figured these lightweight leggings would be an appropriate transition piece between jeans and shorts.  ...

Have you seen Spinster?

Image
Chelsea Peretti starring in Spinster (2020).  Film Poster.*   Chelsea Peretti is an actress and comic known for her role as Gina in the show Brooklyn Nine-Nine . I first became interested in her style of humor after listening to her song Soundproof on Youtube. The song highlights the struggle of needing to find a soundproof bathroom after drinking coffee in the morning. It’s as absurd as it sounds, cleverly written, and hilarious. I’ve grown up around different styles of humor, with bathroom humor being a popular one as a kid...and still a little popular as an adult as well... As you can imagine, listening to this rather edgy song sung by a comedian came as a pleasant surprise. It’s not everyday you get to hear someone highlight some real truths in the world of bowel movements. This song sold me on Chelsea Peretti. Naturally, when I saw her face featured on the poster of the newly released movie, Spinster , I had to watch it.  The film is essentially about a 39 year...

Abraham Linkoln: A New Age Icon for the Next Generation

Image
Earlier this year, my sister visited an Inn, housing relics that once belonged to Abraham Lincoln. She later returned home with a series of Lincoln-themed magnets and postcards to commemorate her reconnection with history. To showcase her newfound (or re-found ) knowledge, she inundated the fridge with these magnets. Many of these magnets contain printed quotes, once remarks, made by Lincoln. Surprisingly, his words still hold applicability in today’s times . Now, before I share these quotes, I will say that Lincoln's memorable moments in history are currently being revisited through a present day lens. Not only has this lens created space to provide new understanding to historical events, but it has also started to redefine historical figures like Lincoln as more complicated than we may have learned in history class. Need the gossip? Follow the asterisks **. Now back to these quotes...“Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?” “A house divided agains...

On the Excellence of Eddie Murphy

Image
Eddie Murphy returns to host SNL in December 2019.           My introduction to Eddie Murphy was through film classics like Daddy Day Care and Haunted Mansion . Eddie has also been a household voice for my family, thanks to his animated roles in films like Mulan and the Shrek series. To this day, hearing Eddie’s voice always feels familiar and warm. In 2015, during my senior year of high school, Saturday Night Live hosted their 40-year anniversary special, showcasing many returning SNL legends from Amy Poehler to Larry David to Tina Fey to Tracy Morgan to Jimmy Fallon to Adam Sandler to Chris Rock...and the list goes on! When Eddie Murphy took to the stage, the combination of his calm and powerful presence, and the crowd’s uproarious response, was more than enough to pique my interest to work backwards on the history of Eddie Murphy--attempting to rewrite, or at least enrich, my connection with Eddie Murphy as comedian first, actor second.    ...
